Free tools can cover a surprising amount of serious research when they are used for focused questions. The important distinction is between free analysis and free execution: a research dashboard can help you study historical tendencies, but it does not replace a broker, order routing or portfolio controls.
Most traders need fewer tool categories than they think. A clean toolkit usually starts with screening, charting, historical testing and a place to compare results across symbols.
Good for idea generation. Use them to narrow a universe, then validate each candidate instead of treating filters as a prediction engine.
Useful for context, trend and recurring seasonal shape. Historical charts become more informative when normalized across years.
Useful for testing a recurring calendar window across many years and checking whether results come from a broad distribution or just one outlier.

Define the symbol and date window before looking at results. This reduces the temptation to keep adjusting parameters until the chart looks good.
Average return is not enough. Median, positive-year percentage, individual yearly outcomes and the number of observations provide a fuller picture.
A pattern that remains similar over 10, 15, 20 and 25 years is more interesting than one that exists only in a hand-picked interval.
Open the dashboard and inspect the recurring seasonal window rather than relying on a generic market saying.
For screening, charting and historical seasonality research, yes. Paid products may add data breadth, automation, alerts, execution or institutional feeds, but cost alone does not make analysis better.
Overfitting. If you try enough windows, at least one will look impressive by chance. Predefine the question and validate across different lookbacks.
